Worst Case by James Patterson & Shakespeare's Landlord by Charlaine Harris

Thanks to our Friends of the Library, I made two new friends. Before leaving on vacation

recently, I picked up several books
from their sale area on the Library’s second floor.

One of the books I chose was Worst Case by James Patterson. Somehow I missed this series featuring Michael Bennett that Patterson has co-authored with Michael Ledwidge. Bennett is a New York City detective and hostage negotiator who is at the top of his game. Worst Case is the third book in the series. If you are just beginning, start with the first, Step on a Crack. During a state funeral for a former first lady at a New York City cathedral, armed men disguised as monks seize the church and dozens of hostages. NYPD officer Michael Bennett takes on the dangerous role of lead negotiator in the standoff. Meanwhile this father of ten experiences a devastating loss when his wife succumbs to a terrible disease. As New York descends into chaos, he faces raising his ten heartbroken children alone – and rescuing thirty-four hostages. Day after day, Bennett confronts the most ruthless man he has ever encountered.

I also discovered Lily Bard, an amateur sleuth and karate student who earns a living cleaning houses. Lily Bard is the creation of Charlaine Harris, who also created Aurora Teagarden and Sookie Stackhouse. Bard has chosen Shakespeare, Arkansas as the place to restart her life after a traumatic event. Shakespeare’s Landlord is the first title in the series. Bard discovers the dead body of her nosy landlord and her plan of starting a quiet new life may end in her death.
