The Malloren World Series by Jo Beverly

New York Times bestselling author Jo Beverley wrote her first Malloren book in 1993.  Her most recent title in the series, Seduction in Silk, published in August 2013, introduced me to the Malloren world, and I was compelled to go back to the beginning.

In very short order I read the original five books that tell the stories of Beowulf Malloren, Marquess of Rothgar, and his half-siblings, Arcenbryght, Brand and the twins Cynric and Elfled.

Although Beowulf, Bey to his family, is oldest, his story comes last.  His father and step-mother die when Bey is 19, and he refuses to let his family be separated.  When Bey was a toddler, he was unable to prevent his mother from killing his infant sister Edith.  He does not want his heir to have this taint of madness.  Throughout the first four books, readers learn more and more about the Malloren family and, as his brothers and sisters find adventure and love, speculate if Bey will break his vow never to marry.  Bey is the most complicated character I’ve met so far in the series, and I like Devilish best.  He is haughty and dictatorial, politically astute and still a devoted brother.

Beverley, a five-time recipient of the Romance Writers of America's RITA Award, and a member of the RWA Hall of Fame, has a degree in history from Keele University.  She imbues her Georgian historical romances with well-researched and accurate details.  She has a lively website and is one of eight authors blogging since 2006 as The Word Wenches.  While I like the interlinking characters in the Malloren world, it is Beverley’s ability to create distinct character and plot elements for each title that kept me reading.  She joins Mary Balogh, Eloisa James, and Julia Quinn as authors that are part of my Author Alerts service, so I am notified when a new book is released.

Book Cover Trend: Ribbons

The River of No Return by Bee Ridgway
First time novelist Bee Ridgway bursts onto the scene with her delightful debut, The River of No Return. A time travel romance populated with well-developed characters and driven by a globe-spanning conspiracy, Ridgway takes the best of speculative fiction and romance to create an atmospheric and intricately plotted novel. After writing a staff review for this book, I started noticing all the other books with ribbons on their covers.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker
Another debut author, Emily Croy Barker, turns her pen a mix of romance and fantasy in The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic. A sweeping and atmospheric novel about a young woman, Nora, who is transported from her dull life as a graduate student to another world of magic and possibility, but the beauty of her new world may be only skin deep.

Queen's Gambit by Elizabeth Freemantle
Elizabeth Freemantle's debut novel delves into the intriguing possibilities of the Tudor court, like Philippa Gregory and Hilary Mantel before her. An atmospheric and richly detailed novel of Katherine Parr's marriage to King Henry VIII (his sixth). She struggles to balance her desires with her desire to survive as the turbulent king's reign nears to its end.

Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
Carol Rifka Brunt's debut novel is a moving coming-of-age story set during the late 1980s. Introverted 14-year-old June is left reeling by the death of her beloved Uncle Finn to the horrors of AIDS. With Finn's death come changes in June's relationships with her family, herself, and even her uncle through meeting his partner, Toby.

The 100-year-old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
Swedish author Jonas Jonasson's American debut is a quirky romp through the 20th century. His engaging, upbeat writing will bring a smile to most readers' faces. Dreading the celebration of his 100th birthday, Allan Karlsson escapes the nursing home and embarks on an unexpected adventure that includes an elephant named Sonya. Alternating chapters introduce readers to Allan's past, Forrest Gump-like adventures.

The Stockholm Octavo by Karen Engelmann
This engaging and richly detailed work of historical fiction is an adventurous romp through 18th century Sweden. A first novel by American author, and sometime resident of Sweden, Karen Engelmann that mixes whimsy and suspense in a way that will appeal to a wide-range of readers. A fortune teller directs Emil Larsson in a quest to find the eight individuals, find love, and save the king.

September Magazines of the Month

It's another sports themed month for September's Magazines of the Month. The U.S. Open is in full swing, until the final matches on September 9th, and the first game of the NFL season will be on September 5th, and you can get the inside scoop on the worlds of tennis and football in the pages of Tennis and ESPN respectively.

Tennis is the official publication of the United States Professional Tennis Association, and produces eight issues every year. Their website has all the latest information on U.S. Open, up to date player rankings, information to help you improve your game, and more: www.tennis.com

ESPN is, unsurprisingly, the official magazine of the sports network ESPN. There's a new issue every two weeks, and they're probably most famous for their annual Body Issue, which features nude pictures of a variety of athletes from Olympians to linebackers. You can check out their website to learn more about all their features: insider.espn.go.com/insider/espn-the-magazine

Stop into the library to check out our display of football and tennis books and movies on the second floor!
